Each student is responsible for their own education and degree. Your academic adviser is here to help and advise about program requirements. Mandatory advisement each semester helps ensure that you graduate in a timely manner.
How to Get Advised
Advising Pins
Every Philosophy major (primary and secondary majors, not philosophy minors nor religious studies minors) must receive a pin from their adviser in order to register.
This is the only way to receive your pin. Each semester before registration, advisers post appointment sign-up sheets outside of their offices.
Advisement Meetings
Most philosophy students, except pre-law students, are advised by the department chair. Please arrive for advisement on time. If you must cancel your appointment, extend the courtesy of 24-houra notice.

Faculty Mentoring
The faculty of the Philosophy department has a long history of mentoring their students in both formal and informal settings. For years, we have served as faculty mentors for Honors projects, McNair projects, and summer undergraduate research projects. More recently, faculty from the department have also worked with students taking advantage of Early Undergraduate Research Opportunity (EURO) scholarships.
There are also three programs unique to our department that place faculty in important mentoring relationships with students: the Department's Faculty-Student Colloquium, the Department's involvement with the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl, and the faculty-student group WIP (Women in Philosophy).
